FAQs About Hypnotherapy at The Oriented Mind

I understand hypnotherapy may seem strange or like mind control. Or you may have no idea what it is used for? I get it!

Briefly, it's a technique to boost internal focus for more efficient results.

But let’s put your mind at rest

  • If you are looking to address an issue you are having, make positive changes, or achieve specific goals, then hypnotherapy is worth considering.

To give you an idea why you would do hypnotherapy here are the most common reasons why people come to see me for hypnotherapy:

Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Hypnosis can help you manage stress, take control of anxiety, which can have positive effects on mental and emotional well-being.

Phobia and Fear Resolution: Hypnotherapy can quickly help you overcome phobias and fears, allowing you to take control and manage situations that previously caused anxiety.

Behavioural Changes: Hypnotherapy can be effective in making positive behavioural changes such as quitting smoking or vaping, weight loss, and overcoming specific habits or addictions.

Improved Sleep: Hypnosis can assist you in improving sleep patterns and addressing issues such as insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Coping with Trauma or PTSD: Hypnotherapy can help you with traumatic events that may have plagued your life.

Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy can assist you in building confidence, improving self-esteem, and fostering a more positive self-image.

  • Hypnotherapy, as I practice it, amalgamates Strategic Psychotherapy and NLP, all facilitated through the use of Clinical Hypnosis - Modern Ericksonian.

This blended approach enables a more relaxed and expedited pathway to absorb new information or insights. It is a valuable tool for addressing a wide array of issues, foremost among them being anxiety

  • Hypnotherapy provides several advantages, including the ability to pinpoint and tackle the underlying issue while fostering the development of positive coping strategies, all within a relaxed setting. By harnessing the power of the unconscious mind, which constitutes a significant portion of our cognitive processes, hypnotherapy is an effective approach.

Hypnotherapy results in less sessions than other therapies as it uses you unconscious mind.

  • Hypnosis is a state where you are relaxed and your mind is open to take on new suggestions. Hypnosis occurs when the brain hoovers in-between the states know as Alpha (relaxation) and Theta (deep mediation and light sleep), this is where you have a strong internal focus. If you have ever practised meditation or mindfulness, or found yourself day-dreaming, zoning out while driving, running or become absorbed in a movie, Netflix or a book, you will have already been in a hypnotic trance state

  • Everyone does hypnosis in their own way, some find it deeply relaxing, others don’t and that’s ok. Nearly everyone can be hypnotised. We go into this hypnotic, trance state regularly throughout our day just doing our routine everyday tasks

  • As long as you have a quiet space and your video on, so I can see you breathing and your face, we are all good. Quite often clients find this a more comfortable space, being at home or a familiar space with their own things around them. There’s also no to-ing and fro-ing from a session. Having said that being on zoom can also be uncomfortable and chaotic for some. So if the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney is accessible to you, then of course we can do a face-to-face session

  • Clinical hypnosis is effective in treating anything that the mind is involved in.

My areas of focus for Adults and Kids are:

Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Low self esteem, Performance Anxiety, Fears & Phobias, Limiting beliefs, Insomnia, PTSD, Smoking & Dependencies

  • There are a number of difference:

    • It is a brief therapy, which means unlike many therapies we would look to have a significant outcome in 4-6 sessions, not 20+ sessions.

    • It is directive, we don’t wait for you to come up with solution, we are goal oriented, and by working together we will find out how you are doing your problem and how best to resolve it.

    • We are focussed on the present and future, if you want to rehash your past and understand why you do something this is not the right therapy for you. Your past is of course important but it is unchangeable, and so to make lasting change we will focus how you are doing your problem and what you can change in your present and future

  • The conscious mind represents a relatively small portion of our cognitive processes, often estimated to be around 5-10% of our mental activity. This is the part of our mind responsible for immediate awareness, decision-making, and active thinking.

Conversely, the unconscious mind, which includes various levels of awareness, memories, emotions, and automatic processes, is believed to make up the majority, accounting for roughly 90-95% of our mental activity. It plays a significant role in shaping our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, often outside our immediate awareness.

  • Yes, I treat children 6 years and over.

Children often have vivid imaginations, and this can make them particularly receptive to hypnosis. Their imagination and creativity can be used as a tool for positive change.

  • You are fully aware of everything that is being said and in control the whole time. If you want to open your eyes and move around you can. There is no way for a hypnotherapist to take over you mind, you are the one in control of your own thoughts, feelings, behaviours.

  • Firstly, Clinical Hypnosis is therapy and not entertainment. Secondly, you are the one in control, and if you want to cluck like a chicken that’s up to you, no-one can make you do that. Stage hypnosis is fuelled by participants who want to provide entertainment, to conform to a stage hypnotist in order to not look stupid in-front of their mates, whilst looking stupid in front of their mates… You figure that one out!

  • Relaxation is not the goal of Clinical Hypnosis. You may become relaxed, and you may not. More importantly we want you to make some change, and to do that you need to absorb new messages, relaxation is a secondary to this.

  • Assuming you adhere to the program as instructed, you can typically anticipate a substantial positive outcome within 4-6 sessions in most cases.
